Preliminary Exercise 14: Defining and Analyzing Sound in Film

Introduction:
The sound from movies is very different from the sound in real life.  For example if your stomach growls in real life that's just it- a sound from your stomach, but in a film its a whole process just to make such a simple everyday sound. This is why I have to learn how to define and analyze the many different sounds in film.

Preliminary Exercise 13: Introduction to Sound in Film (How to be a Sound Engineer)

Introduction:
Sound within the film world includes music, dialogue, sound effects, ambient noise, soundtracks and background noise. These sounds are used to help enhance the movie experience. It could help with the movie's tone, help increase mood, and more. Sound in film is very important because it helps get the message across more easily, helps show emotion, and can dictate how the mood is in the audience,

Reflection:
I learned why sound is even more important than I was led to believe in film and making movies. While writing I had to think about what might be happening and what could possibly affect the mood/tone of the movie and what would that genre typically have or say in its movies. Looking up real movies quotes and sound effects was harder than i thought because I know some of the sounds but i needed the proof for it.

Group progression: Teammate Trouble

Introduction:
My media studies group consists of myself and one other girl; from the start of my posts, we have been working together on all of the assignments and helping each other out here and there but mostly independent work. So far, this has been working out to our benefit and we both have been on track and getting good grades on our assignments because of this set-up. Today we were supposed to be working on finishing up our camera movement/video storyboards and then go think about our movie setup, but unfortunately, she left the Aice program and had to be taken out of our class so now I'm currently working by myself as a group.

Preliminary Exercises 11: Camera Movement Video Storyboard

 Introduction:

Today we will be looking more into how to make storyboards for film and TV preparation. My last post was about camerawork while this one is about camera movement. Unlike camerawork, camera movement is about capturing shot size, camera angle, framing, and composition while also being in motion and moving in any direction. Later I'm going to film these shots and it would show how accurate and helpful having a storyboard is and it has deepened my understanding of storyboard.

Reflection:
In this exercise I learned how to make a storyboard for a video so that when its time for me to film my movie, I will have a better idea of how to make it plus I will need it for my next preliminary exercise.

Preliminary Exercise 9: Practicing Camerawork Day 2

 Introduction:

This is day two of my friends and I are taking pictures of my storyboard in real life and applying the shot sizes, angles, framing, and composition in real-life situations. Storyboarding is planning camera shots and how they "flow" into each other, while camera work is the photography produced by a camera and especially a motion-piture, video, or Tv camera and the reason this is important is because it allows for the audience to feel certain emotions through framing, angles, and composition. As I was planning out my shots with my friends, I had to consider a few things, such as shot sizes, camera angles, framing, and camera composition. I had to worry about these the most because if I messed these up, the pictures could come off blurry, out of focus, look horrible and would be confusing to the audience. A shot size is how much of the setting or subject is seen within a given frame of video or picture, which is how it got its name "shot size," for example, a close up shot (look below) A camera angle is the degree to which a photo and/or picture is taken to create a different view or perception, like the over-the-shoulder and your looking at the person or object over someone's shoulder. Camera framing is the placement and position of the subjects and people in the shots, like a POV, and lastly, composition. Composition is the arrangement of objects in a frame, as well as shapes and the alignment of the background, such as deep focus. While taking the shots it was very hard to do because I had to direct the actors and props everywhere by myself and tried to take the pictures at the same time, which I couldn’t do since I'm short and my camera lens is cracked, so I asked my tall friends to take the pictures on his phone so they can come out cleaner and clear. They all came out nicely and we had fun doing them; learning to take camera shots is important for film because without them the shots and angles would have no meaning and reveal important info too soon.

Preliminary Exercise 8: Practicing Camerawork Day 1

Introduction:

I had to worry about these the most because if I messed these up, the pictures could come off blurry, out of focus, look horrible and would be confusing to the audience. A shot size is how much of the setting or subject is seen within a given frame of video or picture, which is how it got its name "shot size," for example, a master shot (look below).A camera angle is the degree to which a photo and/or picture is taken to create a different view or perception, like the over-the-shoulder and your looking at the person or object over someone's shoulder. Camera framing is the placement and position of the subjects and people in the shots, like a POV (look below), and lastly, composition. Composition is the arrangement of objects in a frame, as well as shapes and the alignment of the background, such as deep focus (see below). Preliminary Exercise 7: Storyboarding Camerawork Day 2 Blog Post

 Introduction:

This is part two of my storyboarding, showing the other half of my storyboard. The reason I broke up the assignment into two blog posts is so people can properly look at and examine each picture I took and drew for the storyboard.  Sheet 3 is for close-up shots to capture small details in objects and actor's faces/body language as well as foreshadowing. Sheet 4 is for any camera works I wanted/ needed to work on, so I chose two new angles as well as camera sizes since I wanted to use them in my movie once I mastered them (hint). Creating the actual storyboard was hard because I knew what I wanted to do, but it was hard to make it "come to life" and draw it on the paper, especially since I'm not the best drawer and my partner was out sick for the week and couldn't do most of it. You don't need any specific skills to create a storyboard except an idea and a place to draw your idea(s). I did the research and found what kind of angles and sizes we can combine together while she drew what she could, which was 1-3 and I 4-8. I took some inspiration from companies like Sony and Dreamworks and watched videos on how they did storyboards (the link is down below). Fun fact  Companies like Dreamworks and Sony re-draw their storyboards 5 times before they actually start animating the product they're doing in order to get the right design.

Preliminary Exercise 6: Storyboarding Camerawork Day 1 Blog Post

Introduction:
This post is about how me and my teammate are starting to draw our storyboard and take pictures in class. ( this is not for our movie yet).   Storyboarding is a graphic portrayal of a script divided into panels so you know what will come next and/or what you have to do. They are generally used to map out a script or story will look once its animated/ acted out in real life but people use storyboarding for many things. For example, when trying to make a movie you could have a bunch of good ideas in your head at once, but storyboarding helps you organize it. Its important in film because it helps film production go faster and helps actors get an idea of what they will be. the storyboard I made was for camerawork, camerawork the way in which cameras are used in films. I made about 16 of them but I will show you half here and the other in my next blog. Each angle and camera size is used for something different and unique and if I don't learn how to use them I could mess up my movie because each shot has a different meaning behind it and I would hate to misinterpret something. For example, using a close-up in the beginning that is supposed to be used for emotion and attention to detail instead of an establishing shot used to show the setting.

Reflection:
The reason we made our storyboards is because

Preliminary Exercise: 5 Analyzing film genre

Genre is a stylistic or thematic category for motion pictures based on similarities either in the narrative elements, aesthetic approach, or the emotional response to the film. A category of artistic composition characterized by there similarities in form, style, or subject matter.  For example Horror, Drama, Adventure, and sci-fi are different types of genre. they could cross into each other as well as be in the same movie (This is duel genre) like a sci-fi horror movie but a genre that is sub divided from a larger genre group is called sub-genre. Its smaller and more specific from the genre it branched off from.  Sub-genres are important because it helps audiences determine and pinpoint what they want to watch from a smaller pool. For example instead of searching for just drama and have millions to choose from you can search for K (Korean) dramas and have just a few to look through. I personally like the genre fantasy more than anything because between all genres fantasty lets you imagine and use your imagination beyond the screen as well as keep you wondering what will happen as well as connect clues to the past that lets you hypotheses.  Its important to film both producers and the audiences so you can get two different views as well as input.

This post is about a poster i made with my former teammate on the genre horror. Horror is a film genre that  try's to makes the audience feel fear and/or disgust for entertainment reasons. Horror films often use dark topics and elements to get their points across like monsters, murder, myths, and apocalyptical events that usually tends to excite the target audience. The purpose of making this poster was so we could focus on one genre we plan to make with our movie and we would like to make a horror fantasy film to share both our favorite genres together since we didn't want to pick one between the two. We could of picked from comedy, drama, horror, action, adventure, and sci-fi. Iconography simply refer to the pattern of signs people see and associate with a particular genre. For example when your watching an action movie you will expect to see fighting scenes from the actors/actorness and might see some weapon props like guns and knifes or how in horror you would expect to see jump scares, scary people and/or creatures, and hear screaming from people getting hurt (mentally or physically) and props like weapons.

Preliminary Exercise 4: Analyzing Mise en scene

Introduction:

The movie/Tv opening I did my graph on is a fantasy teen drama from Disney (and other Disney products) called Descendants. Its a fictional show that has elements of supernatural powers and Disney history behind it. The movie is about the " descendants" of all fairytale icons and how they live, but specifically the four main villain kids, Jay the son of Jafar, Carlos the son of crulle de vile, Evie the daughter of the evil queen and mal the daughter of Malenfant who are given the chance to live among the royals and their kids. Its funny suspenseful and family-friendly for kids to watch. I feel the director was trying to communicate that you don't have to follow in your parents footsteps and you are your own person.

not everything is what you thing it is. I think this because while you watch the opening, you think you see some foreshadowing of who the monster is, but you get something completely different
